The Local Police of Sant Antoni has arrested five people for the possession of a large volume of material for the sale of nitrous oxide, known as laughing gas, in two performances carried out in the last month.
In one of the performancesagents arrested three Spanish nationals who were unloading boxes from a vehicle into a building on Metge Mateu Gasull street, according to the City Council of Sant Antoni in a statement. The agents intercepted and searched the vehicle, in which they located 13 cardboard boxes, whose capacity contained a total of 78 nitrous oxide canisters. In addition, the police seized 18,190 euros located in the bandoliers carried by the detainees and in the door of the vehicle, which is the largest seizure of cash related to the sale of this substance.

On the other hand, the Local Police detected at the ses Variades area two British men who were carrying boxes and bags between the trunks of two vehicles in a hurry, in a suspicious attitude. At that moment, they carried out a search of the belongings and seized a total of 35 nitrous oxide canisters, 30 dispensers and 100 balloons, as well as a total of 4,730 euros and 1,450 pounds sterling which were found in the pockets of the now arrested men.
In both cases, the police arrested the individuals as perpetrators of a crime against public health. Once they were taken to the police station, the corresponding proceedings were initiated.

66 arrested and 15 restraining orders
During the summer season, the Local Police has instructed a total of 66 police proceedings for arrests for the sale of nitrous oxide on public roads.
The Councilor for Public Safety, Neus Mateuthe councilor recalled in a statement that one of the priorities of the Summer Safety Plan is to curb the sale of nitrous oxide in the municipality and this year have been achieved, according to the mayor, “great progress” with the application of 15 restraining orders from the areas where these criminal offenses were allegedly committed, and a prison term of one year.
“The agents are doing a great job against this criminal act, which since this year is having tougher penalties thanks to the previous work done with Guardia Civil and Prosecutor’s Office”, highlighted Mateu.
