The rising cost of fuel and fertilisers, and the consequences for both the primary sector and consumers, will take centre stage at the latest edition of Som Pagès, an event organised by Club Diario de Ibiza and sponsored by AgroBank.

Taking place on Wednesday, 4 November, at 6 pm at Club Diario de Ibiza, the event will bring together representatives from agriculture, fishing and business to examine the challenges facing these sectors across Ibiza and Formentera, collectively known as the Pityusic Islands.

Free Admission at Club Diario de Ibiza

Admission is free and open to everyone. The event offers an opportunity to hear first-hand about the concerns of industry professionals and consumers, who are all affected by the economic pressures facing the primary sector.

Under the title “Land, Sea and Businesses Amid Rising Fuel and Fertiliser Costs”, the event will provide a forum for discussion and reflection on an issue that directly affects the economic activity and future of agriculture and fishing, with knock-on effects for consumers.

The programme will open with an interview with Guillem Bibiloni, AgroBank’s director in the Balearic Islands, who will share the financial sector’s perspective on the challenges currently facing farming and fishing.

Agriculture, Fishing, Businesses and Consumers

The interview will be followed by a round-table discussion featuring four representatives of the primary sector:

  • Antonio Planells, representing Can Sastre.
  • Jerònima Bonafé Ramis, president of Cooperatives Agro-alimentàries Illes Balears.
  • Iván Colomar, president of Agroevissa.
  • José Antonio Castelló, head of the Sant Antoni Fishermen’s Guild.

The discussion will be moderated by Josep Lluís Joan, an agricultural quality promotion officer at the Consell de Eivissa, Ibiza’s island council. He will guide the speakers through the difficulties and challenges created by rising prices for the essential resources on which their activities depend.

The session will bring together the perspectives of farmers, livestock breeders, fishers and businesses connected to the primary sector, highlighting their main concerns and exploring possible ways to respond to the rising costs.

A question-and-answer session will follow, giving attendees the opportunity to exchange views on the issues raised during the event.

Joan Marí Guasch, the Consell de Eivissa’s director for rural and marine affairs, will deliver the closing remarks.

Understanding the Reality of Farming and Fishing in Ibiza

Organised by Club Diario de Ibiza and sponsored by AgroBank, Som Pagès offers an opportunity to gain a closer understanding of farming and fishing in Ibiza, hear directly from the people working in these industries and take part in a discussion about their future.

The event on Wednesday, 4 November, will mark the seventh edition of Som Pagès, organised by Diario de Ibiza. Last year’s edition focused on “Women Breaking Barriers in the Rural World”, highlighting the role of women in rural communities.
