More than 6,000 vehicles travelled in Formentera last summer without a permit, twice as many as in 2024

More than 6,000 vehicles travelled on Formentera’s roads last summer without the authorisation required to access the island during the period regulated by the Formentera environmental project. This is according to figures provided by the Consell de Formentera’s Department of Mobility, presented last Monday by the Second Vice President and Councillor for Environment and Mobility, Verónica Castelló, during a new meeting of the Consell d’Entitats (Council of Entities).

The meeting was convened to announce the two options proposed for the application of Formentera.eco over the next four years, both based on distributing the quota for visiting vehicles according to their environmental label. During the session, Castelló gave a brief overview of the results of last summer’s campaign, although she did not specify the exact number of penalty notices issued during the four months in which the restrictive regulations were in force.

Until last year, these proposed fines were published periodically on the Formentera.eco website, including the date, time and registration number of vehicles detected by control cameras circulating without the required permit and, therefore, without having paid the corresponding fee.

In the 2023 season, a total of 3,100 penalty notices were initially processed. After review, this figure was reduced to 2,207 fines of €1,000 — reduced to €600 for early payment — issued to drivers who entered the island between June 1 and September 30 without authorisation.

In 2024, 3,792 penalty proposals were registered. During the 2025 application period, this figure rose to “just over 6,000 inspection reports”, which have now been forwarded to the Balearic Islands Tax Agency (ATIB) for final processing and collection.
