Floods in Ibiza: 30 litres per square metre unleash chaos in es Pratet… again

Waking up in es Pratet to the sound of heavy rain is enough to make anyone’s heart sink. What happened this Thursday morning —when yet another storm turned the streets of this Ibiza neighbourhood into a small Venice— has been repeating itself for decades. No municipal government, regardless of political colour, has been able to solve this problem.

The torrential downpour forced residents to bring out the masks they had kept since the pandemic in order to cope with the familiar stench of sewage, and once again turned pavements into skating rinks. The difference is that the “ice” here was replaced by a thin, slippery layer of faecal matter and all kinds of filth pushed up from the drains.

The Councillor for Environment and Cleaning of the Ibiza City Council, Jordi Grivé, led a major clean-up operation from early morning, deploying Aqualia trucks, the municipal cleaning service and dozens of council workers. The work focused on cleaning pavements and clearing and draining the sewers, with the Council expecting the tasks to be completed by the afternoon.
