The School of Hotel Management of Ibiza launches a course where companies are vying for students

The Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) sector is booming in Ibiza. Proof of this is the launch of the first master’s degree in this specialty, which will begin on November 11 at the Balearic Islands School of Hotel Management in Ibiza (EHIB). The programme has already attracted the attention of several local business owners, according to economist and dean of the Faculty of Tourism at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), Tolo Deyà Tortella. “Although the course has not yet started, we have already received requests to set up internship agreements or employment contracts”, he said.

The course is based on the programme that has been taught for 13 years at the UIB headquarters in Mallorca. However, the one offered at the School of Hotel Management “is tailored to the specific context of Ibiza, which is the island in the archipelago where the MICE sector is growing the fastest”. “It wouldn’t make sense to bring the course from Mallorca without making any adjustments. It had to be adapted to Ibiza’s reality”, acknowledged the Mallorcan dean.

Regarding the teaching approach, the programme “combines the best of both worlds”. Approximately half of the lecturers are professors from the UIB course in Palma — academics of recognised prestige — while the other half are local MICE professionals who know the Ibiza market first-hand. “Their experience and practical knowledge will be invaluable in transferring real-world expertise to the students”, added Deyà.
