Illegal ads on Airbnb in Ibiza: vans “with mattress” for “camping in nature”

“The van has: USB to charge your phone, a shower, goggles for the beach and a very spacious bed for even two adults. You can go to many nice places on the island. Camping in nature is at your own risk“. This is what you read in one of the “many” illegal ads located on Airbnb by the PSOE of Ibiza, which yesterday denounced the proliferation of irregular offer detected on the platform for this Easter. Despite the agreement reached by the Consell de Ibiza and Airbnb to remove all illegal advertisements and not allow new ones to be created without a valid tourist license number. An agreement that the socialists described as a “failure”.

“The multitude of illegal ads on Airbnb for this Easter shows that the PP is dedicated to selling smoke while from behind it nails us with a stab of tourist saturation and urban speculation that will be deadly for our island,” the PSOE said in a statement. “Despite the triumphalist manifestations of Vicent Marí two months ago, stating that the clearly illegal ads would be eliminated immediately, the reality at the beginning of Easter Week is that one can find a multitude of apartments and apartments in multi-family buildings and even caravans and vans that are offered as tourist accommodation,” they indicated, attaching images of the ads.

“Once again, Vicent Marí sold smoke with grandiloquent headlines that then do not correspond to the facts. This agreement has not served to solve the problem of illegal tourist rentals, nor to curb speculation or the unbearable pressure on housing,” denounced the socialist spokeswoman, Elena Lopez.

From the PSOE put as an example some of the ads they have found “doing a simple search” on the platform. Among them they mention that of a caravan that is “three minutes from the beach walking and in front of a cliff” and that, as detailed in the ad, is “fixed to a land” and can not be driven. And another that is just a van “with a mattress inside” and is offered as “a unique experience, no more luxury hotels, enjoy the real Ibiza and escape from the traditional concept of tourism”.

The Consell responds

Some accusations to which the Consell de Ibiza did not take long to answer via communiqué. A press release in which it reported that the Office for the Fight against Intrusiveness had noted “a drop in the illegal offer in Ibiza” on the Airbnb platform “through monitoring data obtained with the collaboration of SIT Ibiza. “The illegal offer is already the lowest since records have been kept.”the number of caravan ads on the main tourist rental platform has been reduced by 94.3%”.

Prior to the signing of this memorandum about 350 ads were offered on the platform, as reported by the institution, which has 20 ads “located” for Airbnb to remove them. “As more ads are detected they will be reported for removal,” they stressed before clarifying that it should be noted that “many of these ads are deactivated and the system does not detect them until they are not activated, but once detected they are reported for removal.”

In addition, according to the Consell, the supply of illegal apartments has also been reduced. According to the institution, “on April 15, 2025 the monitoring of the platform identified a drop of 34.3% in the irregular offer compared to the same day of the previous year, with 1,685 ads that did not include the tourist registration number of the Consell de Ibiza (indicative that the ad may be illegal, although it is not certain that it is) against the 2,567 ads without island registration number. Therefore, the memorandum signed between the Consell and Airbnb, as well as the restructuring of the Office have achieved in this year a reduction of 34.3% in the irregular offer”.

900 illegal ads less

If you compare the data from this 2025 with the data from 2024 and 2025, a total of 900 ads have been eliminated manifestly illegal of the platform, adds the Consell. In addition, since the platform now requires new advertisers to provide the number of the tourist registry of the Consell Insular de Ibiza when uploading a new ad, they can no longer be marketed on the world’s leading tourist rental website. “These results have led to the Ibiza model of relationship with the platforms has been exported to leading destinations in tourism such as the Canary Islands and Murcia and has been set as an example by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs,” continues the note.

In addition to the collaboration with the different platforms, with which “positive results” are being obtained, the Consell also works with the automation of procedures, which has allowed to start in one month almost twice as many files as in the whole year 2024 and, above all, the implementation of the Plan de Choque de Intrusismo, which has the contribution of funds from the Sustainable Tourism Tax and that this year will allow to hire 35 people who will be dedicated to pursue and process sanctions against intrusiveness in irregular tourist rental as well as in the illegal transport of passengers. “To this is added the support of the Balearic Government in this fight, which is palpable in the last tourist decree approved in Consell de Govern, which has provided for an increase in penalties, which become up to 500,000 euros,” stresses the Consell.
