Italy is in the process of de-escalating and will open tourism in May

The country is preparing a new package of measures aimed at easing restrictions, which will enter into force on 26th April and will continue until July

The Italian government is preparing a decree with further measures to deal with the coronavirus situation. The government intends to defuse the current restrictions as of 26th April and should come into effect until 31st July.

According to the agency Adnkronos, the draft decree foresees the possibility of mobility between regions, visits to family and friends, school attendance and the reopening of leisure spaces.

The new Italian plan also provides opening to tourism from May with various measures to be announced in the coming days.

The Italian Minister of Tourism, Massimo Garavaglia, has declared that “the conditions are right to start the summer season on 15th May”, and so the country’s beaches will be open from that date.

He stated in an interview with “La Stampa” that a version of the “certificates” provided by the EU should be introduced. Furthermore, that screening tests will be performed on railway services as well as checkpoints at popular tourist sites.

New cases

The Italian health ministry on Tuesday, 20th April,  reported 12,074 new cases of coronavirus and 390 deaths linked to the disease, which has now been contracted by 3,891,068 people in Italy and from which 117,633 have been unable to recover.

In Lombardy, the area most affected by the pandemic, 1,670 people were infected and 67 died.

Veneto, the second most affected region, had 930 new positive cases and 28 deaths. The third region most impacted by the pandemic is Emilia Romagna, with 740 infections and 27 deaths.
