Government calls for “responsible use” of face masks as of Tuesday, when they will no longer be compulsory

Morant assures that the current situation of the pandemic allows "new measures", such as face masks to no longer be mandatory, to be taken, thanks to the fact that the "vast majority" of the Spanish population has been vaccinated.

The Minister of Science and Innovation, Diana Morant, called for calm on Thursday , “normality” and a “responsible use” of face masks when they cease to be mandatory in indoor spaces from April 19th.

“Whenever we think it is necessary, it doesn’t take much to take it out and put it on, but in general terms we are moving to a new phase that allows greater flexibility,” she said of face masks in an interview on SER Valencia, reported by Europa Press.

New Measures – Removing face masks indoors

Morant said that the current situation of the pandemic allows “new measures”, such as removing mandatory face masks indoors, to be taken, thanks to the fact that the “vast majority” of the Spanish population has been vaccinated and to the “enormous” decrease in mortality and admissions to the ICU due to coronavirus. “Again, we are going to make decisions based on this stage,” she said, without specifying them.

She also highlighted the success of the vaccination campaign and the measures aimed at “normality”, recalling that Spain was “one of the few countries that has not had to suspend the school year”.

Regarding the situation of the Spanish Hipra vaccine, the Minister reminded that it is in the review phase by the European Medicines Agency in an “accelerated process”, for which she is confident that “very soon” it will be a reality. She also predicted that it will help both this health crisis and future ones.
