The Arxiu Històric d’Eivissa i Formentera adds 60,000 pages to its collection’s digitalization

Among the new features available on the Arxiu Històric d'Eivissa I Formentera's website is the 'Llibre de Privilegis,' which compiles the University's most essential publications

The Arxiu Històric d’Eivissa i Formentera (Aheif) is moving forward in the process of digitising its documentary collections and this year closes with the incorporation of a total of 60,000 new pages from its collection. All the information is now available on the website of the Aehif, which is available for researchers and anyone else interested, according to a press release issued yesterday by the Ayuntamiento de Ibiza (Ibiza Town Hall).

The Consistory stresses that, among all the documentation digitised over the course of 2021, there are texts as important as the ‘Llibre de Privilegis’. This is a codex that contains all the copies of the documents considered most important by the juries of the old University, which endorsed its legal operation, as detailed in the Enciclopèdia d’Ibiza i Formentera (Encyclopaedia of Ibiza and Formentera).

This codex, also known as the ‘Llibre dels privilegis, franqueses i llibertats de la Universitat d’Ibiza’, also compiles the prerogatives and rights accumulated by the Ibizan people from the Christian conquest in the 13th century until the 18th century, when the Nueva Planta decree led to the disappearance of the island’s self-government body.

The rest of the historical documentation that can now be consulted online also includes the ‘Llibre del Convent de Sant Vicent Ferrer’, from the 18th century, or the ‘Llibre de despatx de vaixells de diferents ports’, which records the entry and exit of ships from the 18th to the 19th century, as well as the minutes of the wardens in 1821-1822 or a book with 31 pages from the administration of the Ibiza Town Hall.

In its communiqué, the Consistory explains that during the latest digitisation process, the Arxiu Històric has incorporated three new sections: ‘Church’, ‘Industry, Commerce and Port’ and ‘Llibre de Privilegis’ (Book of Privileges).
