A 27-year-old man was seriously injured on Sunday evening after falling approximately 17 metres into the sea at sa Figuera Borda, near Platges de Comte in the municipality of Sant Josep de sa Talaia, Ibiza, according to emergency medical service SAMU 061.
The emergency call was received at 8:12 p.m. The man had suffered a back injury after hitting the water during the fall.
Emergency medical teams from SAMU 061 were dispatched to the scene, including an advanced life support ambulance and a basic life support ambulance. After being assessed by the medical team, rescuers decided that the injured man would need to be evacuated by land with the assistance of the Ibiza Fire Service.
According to the island’s fire service, six firefighters went to the area to assist the injured man. They used a rescue stretcher to carry him up a narrow staircase leading from the secluded coastal spot to the upper access point.
The man initially told firefighters that he had felt “something strange” in his back after failing to land properly in the water.
Once he had been safely brought to the top of the access route, the injured man was transported by ambulance to the Policlínica del Rosario in Ibiza, where he was admitted with a serious prognosis, according to SAMU 061.
Where is sa Figuera Borda?
Sa Figuera Borda is a rocky cove located between Platges de Comte and Cala Codolar, beyond Cap des Bou, at the foot of a cliff on Ibiza’s west coast.
The secluded spot can be reached via a stairway carved into the rock, with a handrail leading down towards the roofs of several traditional boathouses. Access to the sea is difficult, while the seabed is predominantly made up of rock and gravel, making the area particularly challenging to access for emergency rescue operations.
