The Audiencia de Palma from this Monday hosts the jury trial of a 26-year-old British man, who faces a sentence of 18 years in prison for allegedly killing a friend during an argument when they were in Sant Antoni de Portmany, on the island of Ibiza.
The first session started on Monday shortly before noon, after the jury convened, whose members were summoned to the Audiencia at 9:30am. The accused was expected to testify on the first day of the trial.
In addition to the request for a prison sentence for the crime of murder, the prosecution claims compensation for the parents and siblings of the victim amounting to 306,264 euros, as stated in the indictment.
The facts date back to July 2018 between 6am-8am, when the alleged perpetrator was in an apartment in Sant Antoni with other friends and began to argue with another over a spitting incident.
According to the text from the Prosecutor’s Office, the victim, 21 years old, tried to separate his friends, who were arguing, when the accused allegedly punched him hard in the head and left the young man semi-conscious on the floor.
“With the intention of ending the life” of the young man, who was convulsing and trembling on the floor, the defendant would have continued to land blows and punches until he caused his death.
After what happened, the young British man ran out of the apartment but was arrested by the Policía Local, the prosecution notes.
Trial to end Thursday
The trial is expected to end on Thursday when the jury will begin its deliberation and, after reaching an agreement, the public reading of the verdict will be made.
