Club Diario de Ibiza: Lack of housing and training are major obstacles for the tourism sector

Business representatives blame illegal tourism offers for killing off affordable housing for workers and hurting workforce stability

The tourism sector faces the uncertainty next year, arising from the crisis caused by the war in Ukraine, however, barring unforeseen events, they predict an optimal season thanks to the good positioning enjoyed by the Pitiusas as a tourist destination. However, they warn of the distortion that is generated by the illegal tourism offers, which aggravates the access to housing for residents and workers and, therefore, has become its main burden to complete and stabilize the workforce. These are some of the main conclusions of the I Jornada de Turismo Plus organized yesterday at the Club Diario de Ibiza, under the title ‘Challenges of the tourism business in Ibiza and Formentera’.

During the presentation of the event, the president of the Consell de Ibiza, Vicent Marí has now put on the table that the “control and eradication” of intrusion in tourism should be a priority to end its most serious effects: “The problems of coexistence and lack of housing for residents and workers”. The other great challenge of the sector is to improve the training of workers, so that “they are at the height of the destination”, an objective that could be facilitated with the launch of the Escuela de Hostelería, scheduled for January.

Tourism sector has an opportunity for the ‘resorts’

The first conference of the day was given by the head of the financial consulting and real estate management area of Deloitte in Spain, Patricia Plana, who valued the tourism leadership enjoyed by the Balearic Islands in Spain. Thus, while the arrival of visitors in the country as a whole has fallen by 7.5% compared to 2019, in the Balearic Islands as a whole it has increased by 1.8% (but with a decrease of 3.7% in overnight stays).

Although the next season is is predicted to have “extreme instability” due to the current crisis, financial capital will set its eyes on destinations specializing in leisure and resorts. Here, the Balearic Islands has “strategic value, with solid indicators and positive inertia”.
