Mass brawl on beach sparked by British tourists

A new mass brawl in Mallorca in this case on the beach of Illetes, in Calvià. A large group of drunk British tourists were beaten up by other bathers, policemen and civil guards after they were called to attention for throwing beer cans into the sea. A restaurant waiter and two local police officers had to receive medical assistance for injuries sustained, while eight of the alleged assailants were arrested.

The serious incident occurred at around 7:30 p.m. yesterday evening, on the beach of Illetes, in Calvià. According to sources from the Town Hall, a group of British men and women were celebrating a bachelor party. They had traveled to Calvià from Palma, where they are staying in a hotel in the area of Son Armadams. One of the waiters working on the beach called their attention because they were throwing garbage and beer cans into the sea, in addition to disturbing the rest of the customers. The group’s response was extremely violent, they went after the waiter and hit him hard.

Eight Britons arrested

Several of the victim’s colleagues and two off-duty Guardia Civil officers were the first to intervene. Subsequently, they were six patrols from the Local Police and one from the Beneméritabut the tourists did not give up their attitude and and violently confronted the agents. Local Police sources indicated that they had rarely faced such an aggressive reaction from the tourists, who beat them to a pulp until they were reduced one by one.

The incident ended with eight British nationals arresteds, who have spent the night in the premises of the Local Police of Calvià. Three of them have been transferred to the Guardia Civil and the rest will follow them throughout the day.

The waiter of the premises had to be taken to a medical center when he was unconscious after being hit in the head. Two police officers were also injured and are awaiting evaluation. So far, seven complaints have been filed against the violent group.
