Ibiza’s drought captured in satellite imagery

The National Geographic Institute has chosen the island of Ibiza to illustrate the drought the country is suffering with two satellite images. In one of them, the island looks completely green and was taken just in February last year. In the other image, taken this month, the green has given way to brown.

The comparison of the images was taken by the Sentinel2 L2A satellite on February 1, 2023 and 2024 and shows a “great difference in the greenness of the vegetation due to the scarcity of precipitation,” highlights the National Geographic Institute.

The temperatures in Ibiza last January have been the second highest since records have been kept. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) reported that January 2024 has broken records for maximum and minimum temperatures, being the second warmest since 1961 and tied with 1982. Meteorologists point out that it has also been a dry month in the Pitiusas.

February has not seen much rainfall either and the island’s countryside and livestock are already suffering the consequences.

The island of Formentera remains, as reported by the Govern in a press release, on drought alert. In addition, ibiza’s water reserves have fallen from 43% to 39%.
