Ibiza’s diamond thief guise: Offering dog walks and massages

Errol H., 59, was the mastermind of an armoured car robbery at Amsterdam airport in 2005. The unrecovered loot amounted to more than 40 million euros

Spanish police officers had been searching for him on the island of Ibiza since last November. They had received a tip-off from their Dutch colleagues that Errol H.V., the mastermind of the biggest robbery in their country, might be hiding there. Tracking him down was not easy. The guy they were watching had no home of his own and did not look 59 years old. Nor did he have any money or luxuries befitting a robber of his level.

In fact, in these months he has been trying to earn a few euros by offering himself on the island for walk dogsand small works in villas, and even as a masseur/physiotherapistaccording to CASO ABIERTO, Prensa Ibérica’s investigative and crime channel.

The agents of the Fugitive Locator Group verified that he was staying in a villa where some of his friends were living. And they decided to arrest him on the afternoon of February 6 when they saw him leaving the house. They followed him for a few kilometers and cornered him. The most notorious thief in the Netherlands was on the passenger seat of a car driven by a young woman with whom he had a friendly relationship.

The biggest robbery in the Netherlands

Errol H. V was the mastermind of the biggest robbery in the history of the Netherlands. On February 25, 2005 , he and his gang robbed a KLM airline armored car in the schiphol Airportin Amsterdam. They took jewelry and diamonds worth more than $65 million euros. The Dutch police recovered part of the loot and arrested several of those involved, but some 40 million euros are still missing and no one knows where they are.

The Errol was arrested in Valencia in 2017. Six other cronies of his (four men and two women) then fell in Amsterdam. He was sentenced in 2021 to nine and a half years in prison, but was released until the sentence became final. In October 2023, the Dutch Supreme Court upheld the sentence, but he was no longer to answer to justice.

During the time of the investigation in Ibiza, since last November, police officers found that Errol kept negotiations with an audiovisual platform which had made him an offer to make a series about his life. The agents even kept an eye out for professionals arriving on the island to start filming with him, something that did not happen. In recent months he had also received another offer to write a book about his adventures. He will be able to do the latter from prison.
