The Balearic Ministry of the Environment has called a meeting with town councils in Ibiza to address the island’s drought pre-alert situation and urge water-saving measures.
While Ibiza’s desalination plants ensure a minimum water flow, the production is insufficient during peak summer periods. The government plans to expand desalination plant capacity by 18% to meet demand.
The water reserves in the Balearic Islands are at 62%, with Ibiza having the lowest at 50%. The islands experienced a dry April with rainfall well below historical averages.
