He ran him over and left him abandoned on the asphalt. The Guardia Civil is investigating the fatal hit-and-run of a cyclist yesterday afternoon on the camí de Benimussa, in Sant Josep, by a hit-and-run driver whose vehicle has already been located and recovered. The victim, Bernat Ribas, 49 years old and a lorry driver, was also an Ibizan sportsman, well known and highly esteemed on the island, with a long track record in cycling and duathlon events and a member of the Sant Antoni Master Team club. At the time of the accident, Ribas was accompanied by another cyclist.
The event took place at around 8:00 p.m. The SAMU 061 sent a mobile ICU to the area, but on arrival the medics could only certify the death of the cyclist due to the serious injuries suffered, reported 061.
The perpetrator of the hit-and-run accident was driving an older model of Jeep Wrangler black convertible with UK license plates. The car has damage to the front right side, the front passenger side, as well as to the front window frame of the vehicle. It appears that the driver collided with another vehicle and a rock while fleeing.
The Guardia Civil alerted the local police and immediately activated the search for the vehicle. Last night there were several witnesses who claimed to have seen an SUV with these characteristics on the road to Santa Eulària, or even speculated, but later denied, that they had found it in Platja d’en Bossa, but at the close of this edition had not transcended if they had managed to locate the perpetrator of the fatal hit-and-run or the operation was still ongoing.
From the press service of the City Council of Sant Josep have explained that the deceased was known in the municipality, being a resident of Sant Agustí.
Dani Viñals
In 2017 a drunk and drugged driver at the wheel of an SUV, who was later tried and convicted for the events, ran over and killed the cyclist 34-year-old Dani Viñalsand fled without rescue. This tragic hit-and-run unleashed a wave of indignation in Ibiza, where 250 cyclists demonstrated to demand justice for Viñals and ask for “more respect” for cyclists on the roads, as well as “fair legislation to toughen the penalties”. Because, as the mayor of Ibiza, Rafa Triguero, recalled last night on Twitter, “on the two wheels is not only a cyclist, there are many lives of many families on the bike”.
