Alcaraz, acquitted of workplace harassment of the Chief of Sant Antoni Policía Local

"Today, a little justice has been done, and someone has applied common sense to all of this," adds the former Governance Councillor

Sant Antoni’s former Governance Concejala, Aída Alcaraz, has been cleared of the crime of harassment at work that she was accused of by the town’s Chief of the Policía Local, Javier Verdugo, according to Radio Ibiza Ser. Alcaraz, who stood trial on May 26th in Eivissa’s criminal court no. 1, is away from the island today and has not yet been able to read the full judgement, but has expressed her satisfaction at her acquittal: “Today justice has been done and some common sense has been brought to this case which, from my point of view, should never have happened. I am more than happy“, she told this newspaper.

Alcaraz reiterated that, as stated in the sentence, at no time had she wished to humiliate the Chief of Police, but to restrict his privileges: “As a government team, what we tried to do was to manage the resources available to the Sant Antoni Policía Local in the most effective and efficient way. He [Javier Verdugo] claimed that it was a personal grievance against him. The judgement now establishes that what he understood to be a violation of rights never happened; nothing could be further from the government team’s intentions and mine as concejala of that area [of Governance]”.

It worth remembering that during the trial, the Public Prosecutor argued for a sentence of one year in prison for Aída Alcarez and the payment of 5,175€ compensation for the alleged crime of harassment at work, while the private prosecution requested two years in prison and the payment of 23,000€ compensation for crimes against a person’s moral integrity. Verdugo filed the complaint against Alcaraz in March 2017.
