The Ensemble Cristóbal de Morales will perform a programme of Renaissance music on 24 October, featuring works by Palestrina, Francisco de Guerrero, Joan Brudieu and Mateu Fletxa el Vell.
The Ensemble Cristóbal de Morales will give a concert at Ibiza’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MACE) on Saturday, 24 October, from 7pm to 8pm. Organised to coincide with Cel d’Or, an exhibition by artist Stefan Brüggemann, the performance will explore the rich musical heritage of the Renaissance.
The ensemble’s line-up for the occasion will feature Irene Mas (soprano), Eulàlia Fantova (mezzo-soprano), Oriol Guimerà (tenor) and Ferran Albrich (baritone), under the direction of Pere Lluís Biosca.
The programme brings together works by some of the leading figures in European Renaissance music. From Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, the ensemble will perform Sicut cervus and Super flumina Babylonis. The works by Francisco de Guerrero will include Ave Maria, Niño Dios d’amor herido and Si tus penas no pruevo.
The concert will also feature Ma volentat and Plena de seny by Joan Brudieu, alongside La Negrina by Mateu Fletxa el Vell. The programme has been conceived as a musical complement to the visual world of Cel d’Or, bringing Renaissance vocal music into dialogue with Brüggemann’s contemporary art.
An Ensemble Dedicated to Rediscovering Musical Heritage
The Ensemble Cristóbal de Morales was founded in November 2023 on the initiative of Pere Lluís Biosca and organist Juan de la Rubia, following a proposal from the Museu de Lleida to record works from its musical collection.
The group’s first project focused on a book of masses and Magnificats by Cristóbal de Morales, published in Lyon in 1551.
The ensemble brings together performers associated with some of Europe’s leading vocal groups, alongside musicians who have established careers as soloists.
Born in Palma, Irene Mas has performed at venues and events including the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Oxford Lieder Festival. Eulàlia Fantova is a member of the Cor Francesc Valls and has collaborated with the Capella Nacional de Catalunya.
Oriol Guimerà, who trained at the Escolania de Montserrat, has worked with ensembles including the Capella Reial de Catalunya. Ferran Albrich, a graduate of the Conservatori del Liceu, has developed a career spanning lied, oratorio and opera.
The concert will be led by Pere Lluís Biosca, director of the Cor Francesc Valls at Barcelona Cathedral and the Cor Madrigal. His work has a particular focus on vocal repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to contemporary music.
