It is unusual, to say the least, for someone to enter a hospital wearing a jacket in August, even if they are suffering from a severe cold. That was the thought of José Carlos Granda Martínez and his colleague Paco Ruiz, both security guards at Can Misses Hospital, when a man entered the emergency department at around 3 p.m. this summer.
At the time, Granda was near the access door, while Ruiz was in the room where the hospital’s security cameras are monitored. The black garment worn by the man, aged between 35 and 40, immediately caught their attention. He appeared nervous and, as soon as he approached the admissions desk to give his details, Granda decided to approach him to ask what he needed. “He told me he wanted to be seen, and I asked him why”, Granda explains. Without answering, the man added: “Either they attend to me or I’ll mess it up”, he ecalls. At that moment, no one was waiting to be seen in the emergency department, although around ten people were sitting in the waiting room.
It was then that Granda noticed the tip of a knife protruding from the sleeve of the man’s jacket. It was thin and long, similar to a ham knife. “When I saw him sliding it out, I had no choice but to restrain him”, he explains.
A few days ago, Granda received a Medal of Recognition from the Ibiza and Formentera Health Area for his actions. The award was also presented to José Plà, another security guard at the hospital, who saved a man from drowning earlier this month.
