Of all the emotions felt by the merchants of the Mercat Vell in Vila, perhaps the only one left to mention is deep sadness — although everyone knows that there is only a small step from sorrow to anger. Both the stallholders who once sold inside the market and the owners of nearby businesses have been waiting for more than a year for its rehabilitation.
The works began last September but were halted just a few weeks later following the discovery of archaeological remains. Since then, all of them complain that they have received no updates. “Just when they had finally started, everything was stopped — and we know nothing”, says the manager of one of the establishments in the square. From another business, whose owners prefer to remain anonymous (as do the others), the tone is more forceful: “It’s incredible how neglected we are. This is awful. Very sad”.
The most repeated criticism is the lack of communication from the Ibiza City Council. “We found out from the press that archaeological remains had been discovered, then we saw the works had stopped — and we haven’t heard anything since”, adds the first interviewee.
