Financial education in Ibiza for the generation that may choose not to work

The hustle, bustle and excitement of around 200 teenagers from the schools and institutes Mestral, Virgen de las Nieves, Santa Maria and Sa Colomina filled the Club Diario de Ibiza on Wednesday morning, where the first edition of the Financial Education Forum took place. The event, sponsored by CaixaBank, featured influencer and financial expert Josep Vidal, together with influencer and stock market investor Jaume Vidal.

“Hey, you can’t eat here”, one of the teachers was heard saying. “It’s about to start — sit down and don’t get up again”, added another. Speakers Jaume and Josep Vidal made their first appearance, waiting at the entrance to the auditorium. Some students recognised them and pointed them out to their classmates before approaching to greet and shake their hands — like rock stars.

Once everyone was seated, Pilar Abad, known as ‘Piru’, director of retail banking at CaixaBank Baleares, opened the forum with a brief presentation about imagin’s digital banking. She did so, too, like a rock star. “Do you like paying with your phone? Do you like sending or receiving money with your phone?”, she asked. The students all responded enthusiastically, sparking an impromptu competition between schools. “This side shouted it with more conviction”, joked Piru, referring to the section where most of the Sa Colomina students were sitting.
