Ibiza students join national strike against bullying after Sandra Peña’s suicide

Secondary schools in Ibiza have joined the national student strike called by the Student Union following the tragic case of Sandra Peña, a teenager who took her own life after suffering bullying at a school in Seville. The strike has been scheduled for the entire school day on 28 October, with rallies starting at 12 noon in different cities across Spain.

The strike is authorised for students in the 3rd and 4th years of ESO, as well as 1st and 2nd years of Bachillerato, and all levels of Vocational Training in schools across the island. Students have been encouraged to “take to the streets” in solidarity with the young woman’s family and to express their rejection of all forms of violence, both inside and outside the classroom.

Through the academic management and communication platform of the Balearic Government (Gestib), schools have informed families about the reasons for the strike and reminded them of students’ rights to participate. Teachers will not be allowed to carry out any teaching activities that involve advancing the syllabus or conducting assessments, in order to guarantee equal opportunities for all students. However, those who decide to join the strike will have to justify their absences through Gestib.
