“Dear Alfredo, thank you for the nights and the beats we shared together. Your music and vision have defined the sound of Balearic Beat and the soul of Amnesia. Your legacy will always live on in our dancefloor. We will not forget you. Rest in peace”. This is how Amnesia nightclub has announced in its networks the death in Ibiza of Alfredo Fiorito, Dj Alfredo, legend of this club and electronic music on the island, at 71 years of age.
Fiorito arrived in Ibiza in 1976 with his then partner fleeing the Argentine military dictatorship. He embarked to Montevideo and from there to Barcelona, but in Barcelona they heard about the freedom of Ibiza and decided to continue their journey. “When we arrived on the island we realized that this was the place we were looking for,” he explained a few years ago in an interview with Diario de Ibiza. Here he started working as a craftsman in the market of es Canar making scented candles and then set up a clothing store.
But Alfredo, who had already written about music in an Argentinean magazine, kept that restlessness and the Frenchman who ran the Be Bop bar in the port of Ibiza offered him to put drinks and music on the premises. The Be Bop was the trendy bar that winter and the following year he was already a regular at Amnesia. There he got to know electronic music thanks to an American: “He brought some Trax records in a bag, I discovered house music and in the summer I took it to Ibiza”, he said in the interview with es Diari.
Alfredo held a six-year residency at Amnesia and was recognized as one of the most underground djs on the island, attracting thousands of young people from all over the world, especially from the UK.
In 1988, DJ Mag recognized him as DJ of the year. In 1990 he became resident of the discotheque Pachá. The rest is history. Alfredo becomes the father of the balearic beat, he also passes through Pacha, Privilege and Space and becomes a legend.
The blow of the covid
Covid hit him hard in 2020. He suffered a stroke and was left without benefits, so he could barely support himself and his family. That’s why in 2021 he launched a campaign to receive help to subsist until he could stroke again. In one week he surpassed 25,000 euros, with which he managed to survive for a while. The dj did not hide his excitement for the response of the people, which allowed him to overcome the first trouble.
But his health was touched and in 2024 his son Jaime, and The Secret Dj launched another campaign to ensure his assistance and welfare. Under the name alfredo needs you’, in a few days raised more than 20,000 euros, which shows the affection felt for Alfredo by both his colleagues and the general public.
