The Provincial Court of Palma will judge in February six alleged members of a gang that committed a ten robberies in stores in Mallorca, Ibiza and Formenterain which they obtained a booty of 870.000 euros almost a decade ago. Among his targets were the Capuccino coffee shops in Palma, Andratx and Portals. The prosecution and the defenses have not reached an agreement in the preliminary hearing held this Friday, so the court has set the oral hearing for early next year. Among the defendants are Jonatan Cazorlawho was already sentenced to four years in prison for the Ibiza courthouse fire and another seven and a half years for the fire in a squatted building in the same city in which a woman died.
The prosecution argues that the defendants deployed a frenetic criminal activity in 2015. Cazorla, his brother and the rest of the gang took advantage of the fact that the premises had contracted the fire extinguishing and fire extinguisher overhaul service with a company owned by his family to study the interior, the location of the safes and security systemsaccording to the thesis of the Public Prosecutor’s Office. At other times they posed as workers of a telephone company to enter the stores and obtain this information.
The first robbery took place in aa ibiza jewelry store in April 2015. After disabling the alarm system, they broke into the store in the early hours of the morning, opened the metal shutter with a heat cutting tool, burst the safe and took almost half a million euros in jewelry. In July they performed in a restaurant in the migjorn beach of Formentera, from which they took 40,000 euros. They then made off with 133.000 euros in a pub on the beach of s’Arenal in Sant Antoni, where they opened three safes with a sledgehammer. On August 2 they broke into another business in Platja d’en Bossa, obtaining another 24,000 euros. On the 10th they obtained more than 60,000 euros in jewelry from another establishment.
The gang acted in August in Mallorca. In a car dealership in Palma they took a vehicle with the keys in it and used it to move around the island and commit other robberies. Three of them were in the capuccino cafeterias in Palma, Andratx and Puerto Portals (Calvià). In the first one they took 67,000 euros and 23 keys to the safes of the rest of the chain’s premises, where they got 15,600 and 34,000 euros. In the Portals robbery they were surprised by a security guard. They sprayed him with an irritant spray and fled.
The Prosecutor’s Office charges the suspects with crimes of robbery with force, robbery with violence and forgery.
