The great tree of Jesus’ church will have to be cut down

One of the great mimosas that preside over the square of the church of Jesus will have to be cut down. The Santa Eulària City Council reports that the trunk is rotten and has lost almost all the core wood. The aim is to prevent the entire crown or one of the large branches of the tree from collapsing at any moment.

“It should be remembered that the specimen is located right in front of the access door of the church and in an area of pedestrian walkway so it is a busy place and the risk that the fall of the tree produced personal injury is very high,” says the City Council in a note.

Technicians of the Department of Environment and the company Ibiza Green have studied the state of this specimen of Acacia dealbata. Despite the apparent good condition of the crown, the inner part of the trunk is rotten and does not guarantee that a windstorm or any other circumstance could cause it to break and collapse on the road. Currently there is a cable that holds the main branch to another branch to prevent the first branch from falling under the weight of the branches.

“In the trunk it has an internal rot in the vascular vessels, which has produced a large hollowness in the entire shaft of the tree,” the study notes. “These damages, added to the magnitude of the specimen, make it possible to break the most stressed part of the trunk, compromising the stability of the tree and being a risk for pedestrians,” he adds. “Added to this is the high drought suffered during the summer, which makes the wood fibers less elastic and more likely to split than under normal conditions,” he concludes.

Logging will take place as soon as possible but, in the meantime, a perimeter has been delimited around the tree to minimize the risk in the event of a total or partial fall of the tree. Now we will study the possible removal of the stump and replacement by another plant or if it is left given the high capacity for regrowth that this type of trees have.
