B Jones: around the world, punctuating, of a dj from Eivissa

Beatriz Martinez would never have imagined how his life would turn out. He left his hometown of Jaén, Andújar, at the age of seventeen to come to Eivissa to work in the hotel business. Who would have told her that a few years later she would become B Jones, a dj recognized all over the world and the first Spanish artist to take the stage of the most famous electronic music festival in the world, Tomorrowland.

Her artistic name was initially Baby Jones, because she wanted to have a name “that sounded good to everyone”, and in her first posters she appeared with this pseudonym. Later she left only the B and it seemed to come from Beatriz. Baby because I’ve always been very sweet and Jones because I’ve always been very adventurous, like Indiana Jones”she emphasizes.

Women in this world can also succeed, she is a clear example: “I think we don’t have any problem with the public, it’s all the same to them. You can always find something unpleasant, but I think that being a woman in this industry has a positive thing too: we are less. And if you do it well, you can stand out more easily.

What she enjoys most when she is on stage is the people. He describes himself as a nervous person, but when he sees the reactions and the faces of the people, who dance and enjoy it, he relaxes. She remembers when they brought a very big Spanish flag to Tomorrowland last year, “the biggest Spanish flag that has ever been brought to the festival, I don’t know how many people should have been down there”. For her, Tomorrowland has been “a complete dream”.

Travels around the world

Thanks to his success, he has traveled around the world, from one end to the other. From Latin America to Asia. “Everywhere in the world there is something different and special. In every place I think I find something, I always go to places and say ‘Oh, I could live here'”, he assures. He gives the example of his latest destination: Oman. He really loved it because of how the people live, because of the simplicity: “And how they have fun at parties. There there is no alcohol there. As people are not used to the nightlife, to the djs, they appreciate so much having you in the booth… they are happy dancing”. “I don’t find any difference in a club with alcohol, drugs and rock and roll with the party where I was in Oman. You see that they have a great time and they appreciate it”he emphasizes.

Culturally, she does notice the difference, for example, in this last trip to this Middle Eastern country, in the way of dressing, since women are more covered up: “I like to have respect for their customsif I know that women wear long dresses and short sleeves and no braces, then I do, even though they don’t say anything about it”.

“There were days when I went to Ushuaïa, Mambo and Hï all at once, with no time even to dance” – B Jones, dj

The sad part is that he almost never has time to go sightseeing on these work trips. “Now it’s calmer, but when my daughter was younger, I went to Singapore to puncture and at six o’clock in the morning to return directly from the club,” she explains. She also remembers a summer when she was a resident in Ushuaïa on weekdays and on Sundays she played in Korea: “I went to this country, I punched, I didn’t even go to the hotel, the car was waiting for me, I returned to the airport, I came back here [Eivissa]my manager was waiting for me and there were days when I played Ushuaïa, Mambo and Hï all in a row”he assures. She didn’t even have time to relax.

When asked how he put up with this rhythm, he answers that by illusionshe was so grateful to be able to puncture in those places that in the end it was all the same to me”. Brazil, Miami, Thailand and Bali are destinations where she has spent a little more time because they are longer trips. In reference to the hotels, he assures that “normally” they are very good: “I’m very happyIn my career I’ve had a bit of everything. I suppose it’s better now”, he laughs.

If I had to return to a country for pleasure, I would choose Japan: “Tòquio is my favorite city and I don’t like cities, that’s why I love living in Eivissa. I am a person who values respect and energy and that is felt there. How can such a big city work so well with so much respect?”he reflects. Then there is a lot of diversity, as in clothing. “Everything is allowed and it looks normal. I molta seguretat“He then recalls that he forgot his cell phone in a safe in the center of Tòquio, went to the hotel and didn’t realize it until two hours later: “The phone was still in the box, even placed in a way so that he could find it”.

“Music is a universal language, in the cabin we understand each other and, if not, with a translator”

Languages is another subject: “I didn’t speak any English when it started. Little by little… In the end, my al-lotment is English. I live in English. I have my Andalusian English, of course, I won’t lose it“. “Music is a universal languagein the cabin we understand each other and, if not, with a translator and learning”, he adds.

The dj has now realized the dream of her life: to buy a house in Eivissa. “I can travel, in general I’m going to Thailand because I like it, but my place is here. And now I also have my family here”, she confirms. He already said at the beginning, when he went to Madrid years ago, that he wanted to come back, because he has always felt the island “like home”: “I’ve always felt at home”Eivissa is a bit like Tòquio, where there is a lot of diversity and everything works well, you feel good energy. Everyone is happy to be here and it shows. In the village there are many more spiritual people, beyond schedules and studies. I’m very happy that my daughter was born here and grew up like this, that she feels free“.

Martinez says that in Eivissa there are opportunitiesif you want to work, you work. However, a little less, because there are a lot of VIPs in the nightclubs. But I remember when I came here that people with money came to be normal, they came to enjoy being normal. I loved that, where we all mingled in the same way“. In this sense, the dj says that she no longer goes out to party, when she has a free day she imagines walking down to sa Pedrera de Cala d’Hort, and, on her way back, she tries to eat in a restaurant: “Aquesta és la meva festa ara”[This is my party now]. He also likes to have “some tapas and wines” at the Plaça des Parc, where it is preserved, in his opinion, “the magic of the island”.

Eivissa, in particular, for me, is one of the best places in the world to live. It is to see that there are now many problems with housing. I have taken this step, I have had these problems. Now, at the moment, I don’t have them, but except for this part, which really has to be worked to solve it, I think it’s the best place to live”, he concluded.
