Inter-island tourism on a high: third best summer in the last decade

A total of 140,000 people travelled by boat or plane from Mallorca to Menorca and Ibiza in June and July

In times of pandemic, travelling during the summer in the same Balearic territory has become one of the main options for Mallorcans. At the end of August this newspaper showed the “record Mallorcans exodus – by boat – in the month of July to Menorca and Ibiza”, the result of various factors such as proximity, the greater sense of security with the coronavirus or the tourist vouchers of one hundred euros offered by the Government to enjoy another of the islands.

The latest data provided by the Institut d’Estadística de Balears (Ibestat) state that this summer, from June to August, the fourth highest figure in the last decade of people who have traveled from the airport of Son Sant Joan to Menorca and Ibiza was reached. This is only surpassed by what was achieved between 2017 and 2019, the only years in which there have been more than one hundred thousand people. This summer, in total, there have been 98,000 passengers who have moved from Mallorca to the other islands by air transport. Compared to 2020, following the outbreak of the coronavirus, this year the figure was 57% higher. The record was two years ago, when it exceeded 127,000 people.

If the data from June and July for boat and plane trips from Mallorca are added to the rest of the Balearic Islands,  the result is the third best summer ever: a total of 140,000 locals have moved between the other islands, only behind what happened in the two years prior to the pandemic, years which exceeded 160,000 passengers. Thus, the figure for 2021 was 41.25% higher than last year, when the upward trend of previous years was cut short due to the coronavirus.
