UD Ibiza’s pending accounts with FC Cartagena

UD Ibiza - Paco Jémez's men weigh their future against the 8th-placed side

UD Ibiza will face one of its main ‘black beasts’ this Saturday in Can Misses (6:15pm) since Amadeo Salvo‘s club began competing in the national category. Cartagena, which this season has become a direct rival of the celestes both in the fight for permanence and now in the dream of reaching the ‘play-off’, brings bitter memories to the island team after conceding the two most resounding defeats of their short career. Cartagonova, the Murcian team’s stadium, has been nothing but a nightmare for UD Ibiza. There they have suffered the most adverse results: in 2018, when the team, then coached by Andrés Palop in Segunda B Group IV, succumbed to an embarrassing 6-0 result and last October, already in LaLiga SmartBank, when Juan Carlos Carcedo’s players were brought to their knees in the Cartagena coliseum by another resounding 5-1 loss.

The most recent meeting saw the top scorer of Segunda, Rubén Castro, as the protagonist and scorer of two goals against the celestial team from eleven meters out. Dauda, Okazaki and Delmás completed the victory, which Nono made up for in the last minute. In that match, as was also the cast last Monday in Almería (2-0), central defender Álex Gálvez was sent off and will miss next Saturday’s match.

UD Ibiza therefore has several scores to settle with FC Cartagena, who will arrive at Can Misses four points ahead and in eighth position in the table, just two points away from qualification. Paco Jémez’s team faces the game with a thirst for revenge against another of the category’s up-and-coming underdogs.

However, Luis Carrión’s side will arrive on the island with their confidence dented after losing at home to UD Las Palmas by 0-2 . A result that does not tarnish their great campaign, but that could shake their foundations for the upcoming league matches. Paco Jémez’s side also saw their progress in the standings halted by the same result in Almería, where Joan Francesc Ferrer ‘Rubi”s side were far superior and put the newly-promoted side in their place.
