Musk postpones payment verification on Twitter indefinitely

In mid-October, the billionaire owner of the social network Twitter promised that the paid verification service would be available from November 29th.

Billionaire Twitter owner Elon Musk announced Monday that he is again postponing the controversial user verification fee, this time without offering a specific date when the service will be available.

Holding off relaunch of Blue Verified until there is high confidence of stopping impersonation. Will probably use different color check for organizations than individuals.,” Musk wrote on his online account.

In mid-November, Musk had promised that the paid verification service would be available again as of November 29th, something that ultimately will not happen.

On November 11th, Twitter stopped access to its Blue paid service, which had been giving subscribers the blue verified user symbol for a few days, and brought back the “official” mark to distinguish some accounts from potential impostors.

Chaos on Twitter

The social network thus took a new turn to try to deal with the chaos generated by the latest decisions by its new owner, which had led to a proliferation of users impersonating personalities or companies.

The option of paying $8 per month to access the verified account symbol, which until then had distinguished relevant profiles whose identity was confirmed, triggered confusion, making it easier for users to impersonate others as a joke or for fraudulent purposes.

Companies such as Nintendo, the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly or Tesla itself, headed by Musk, saw users armed with the blue verification tick impersonate them for hours, until their accounts were suspended.
