Armengol is convinced that the Balearic Islands will save the tourist season and advocates a shared mobility strategy

She recommends a careful de-escalation in order to reach the summer with a low incidence of the virus.

The President of the Balearic Islands Government, Francina Armengol, is confident that this summer’s tourism season will be saved. To do so, she urges that a common European mobility strategy be drawn up as soon as possible. The executive took part in a meeting organized by Levante-EMV on last 21st May. During the meeting she agreed with President Ximo Puig (also present) on the need to carry out a prudent escalation to ensure that the summer can be reached with an acceptable incidence of the virus.

Armengol expects to reach the goal of 30-40% of the vaccinated population by June. “We can have a tourist campaign because when the most vulnerable are vaccinated we will have a very different scene and the health system will be less stressed,” said the Balearic president. She insisted on the importance of obtaining the European mobility certificate and safe tourist corridors to move forward. “It won’t be like the 2019  season, but we are going to get out of this tunnel,” she said.

Armengol and Puig also shared the need to strengthen common links between the communities of the Mediterranean axis in the face of numerous common problems, such as funding. Also to confront centralism. “Spain is not Madrid and this is often forgotten. Sometimes decisions are made by taking only Madrid as a reference point,’ said Armengol. She also said that “better understanding” is needed to understand the specificities of each territory”. “When decisions are made from the centre with the centre in mind, we are making the wrong strategy. It is not normal that there is no radial conception in Spain”, the president reiterated.
