The heavy downpour that unloaded yesterday on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera, with about 37 liters per square meter in Sant Joan, according to the Aemet, caused several incidents, some punctual, such as a power outage in Can Bonet, and others more common, like a sewage spill in the port, traffic chaos and flooded streets in Vila.
Sewage flows into port
The rain began to fall heavily in the capital shortly after 4pm. Immediately, several streets (also in Platja d’en Bossa and es Viver, for example) were flooded and barely an hour later one of the city’s sewage outlets began to pour rainwater and sewage into the port between the pontoons located at the entrance to the port area and the moorings for large yachts in the Martillo, in front of the Andenes.
The Port Authority activated its emergency protocol and deployed barriers to contain the spill.
The City Council explained that the spill came from one of the “emergency spillways that have been kept open to prevent flooding in the stores and restaurants in the Marina and the port in the event of a downpour”. This flow has been previously “filtered” in the storm tank, explained the Vila City Council, so it released “rainwater mixed” with fecal water, but without solid debris.
