The Santa Eulària City Council began yesterday the fourth clean-up of the year of sa Font d’en Lluna, a breeding and nesting site for different aquatic birds had been accumulating dirt for weeks. The work will last several days.
In addition to cleaning, the reeds will be removed from part of the riverbed. “Both interventions are carried out to improve the habitability of the river for the fauna and to minimise the inconvenience to residents and visitors due to the accumulation of posidonia brought in by the wind,” as well as other types of organic matter accumulated on the riverbed, according to the municipal government team.
To prevent it from continuing to be a source of uncleanliness, Santa Eulària has banned feeding the ducks, because the bread, among other foods, in many cases ended up rotting at the bottom.
The City Council waited until the bird nesting season was over, in the second half of June, to clean up the area “without disturbing the birds, some of them of great importance, such as the moorhen, reed warbler, nightingale or green-necked duck and others more common, such as the mallards”, which nest in the area.
