According to a statement from the company, Facsa, the concessionaire in Sant Antonio, has invested in water technology and infrastructure, resulting in a savings of 68,284 cubic meters of water from 2020 to the end of 2022, which is equivalent to 23 Olympic swimming pools. As a result of these efforts, the municipality’s water performance indicator has improved to 87.72%, which means a reduction in the loss of water supplied to 12%, compared to the first year managed by Facsa in 2020. However, Luis Miguel Redondo, the head of service of the water company, stressed the importance of continuing to reduce this ratio and improve the performance of Sant Antoni’s water distribution network.
“The Balearic Hydrological Plan aims to limit water losses in municipalities to 17% of the supply by 2027. In our case, not only have we achieved this goal, but we have exceeded it by five percentage points, achieving it five years earlier than expected. This achievement translates into economic savings, a reduced environmental impact, and the potential for further improvement over the next five years,” commented the Mayor of Sant Antoni, Marcos Serra. However, the company’s statement highlights that despite these positive results, the Balearic Islands’ average for water losses in 2022 is much higher at 32% of the drinking water supply.
Facsa has reported that one of their most successful initiatives has been engaging service users through the use of over 1,600 smart meters installed among subscribers. This has allowed for better real-time monitoring and anticipation of major incidents in the water supply network. Facsa has utilized its digital solutions division, Waternology by Facsa, which focuses on developing innovative, sustainable and transparent digital solutions for the intelligent management of the water cycle while ensuring cybersecurity.
Renewal of infrastructures
The Sant Antoni City Council has been collaborating with the operator in recent years to renew and improve the city’s infrastructure, including the installation and renovation of 9.6 kilometers of the supply network. The latest efforts have included the renovation of the drinking water supply and sanitation network in the old town, specifically in the areas of Santa Agnès, Cristòfol Colom, and Sant Mateu. These upgrades are set to be completed by March of this year.
