On Wednesday, part of the cliff above the beach es Bol Nou in Sant Josep fell in a rockslide to the ground and on the rope that prevents people approaching the rock. The City Council have reported that it has been decided to expand the perimeter, leaving another meter of space between the rock wall and the sandy area where people spread their towels.
The decision has been taken by the Coastal and Beaches Department to be at the top of the cliff a “very thin overhang of rock in a compromising situation“. The City Council will ask the Coastal Authority to remove it or allow them to make it fall in a controlled manner.
Fortunately there was no one in the area at the time of the rockslide and there have been no injuries, the Consistory has detailed.
Rockslides common in the area
The City Council have reminded the public that these landslides are common on this beach due to the composition of the cliff which is “uncompact ground and very exposed to inclement weather”. Several signs have been placed at the entrance to the beach to alert visitors.
The last major landslide that forced the closure of a part of the beach was in September 2019.
