Early yesterdayย it began to rain heavily on the island, especially in the area of Sant Jordi. The rainfall caused flooding on several roads on Ibiza, which has significantly hindered circulation. The rain flooded the tunnel of the airport road at the height of Sant Jordi, which forced the closure a section and caused traffic jams.
At around 7:40am yesterday morning a lane of the underpass at the roundabout of the racetrack towards Ibiza was cut and shortly after, at 8:15am, the same happened with a lane on the road to the airport and the access to the roundabout. At 9:45am it was possible to restore circulation in these two points, said the Consell de Ibiza.
According to data from the Aemet, 12 liters per square meters of water fell yesterday, enough to generate the circulatory chaos in some areas and a new sewage spill in the port of Ibiza.
Yellow alert for rain and storms
Ibiza and Formentera are on yellow alert for rain and storms, which has been activated for 18 hours and will remain until 11am today. In this space of time the State Meteorological Agency forecasts an accumulated rainfall of 25 liters per hour and up to 80 liters per square meter within two or three hours.
In view of these forecasts, Civil Protection has advised extreme caution when driving in areas of water accumulation and preferably circulate on main roads and highways.
It also recommends parking vehicles in high places and away from water torrents and always stay away from flood zones, rivers, torrents and valleys when the rain can cause surprises in the countryside.
