4 fire prevention cameras will monitor 80% of Ibiza’s forest cover

The fire detection camaras are the first step in making Ibiza a 'Smart Island'.

If all goes according to plan, by mid-June at least two of the four cameras of the prevention and early fire detection system of the project ‘Ibiza, Intelligent and Sustainable Tourism to turn the island into a ‘Smart Island’ will be installed. “We will cover 80% of the island’s forest mass and the idea is that in summer they will all be working,” stresses the island director of Innovation for the Consell, Xavier Santamaria.

The first ones will be installed in sa Talaia de Sant Llorenç and sa Talaia de Sant Josep, and will be placed in communication towers of private companies. Weeks later there will be two more in Puig de Camp Velll (Sant Antoni) and sa Talaia de Sant Joan, which will be installed on two towers of the Balearic Institute of Nature (Ibanat).

Monitoring fire outbreaks in isolated areas

These are four optronic cameras that enable the detection of fire outbreaks in isolated areas, where it is difficult to detect small burns, and that operate 24 hours a day in poor visibility conditions, such as fog or haze. Likewise, these cameras will facilitate subsequent firefighting tasks due to the thermographic and real-time monitoring of the fire outbreaks, in addition to the exact location.

“What they do is sweep the area, since they have a wide range of coverage and detect hot spots, as well as temperature variations. When they detect these anomalies, for example that an area goes from 30 to 45 degrees, they will issue a warning to the fire department and Ibanat,” indicates Santamaria. “They will have continuous access to the data generated by these cameras, but the system is intended to be autonomous,” he adds.
