Ibiza airport has not only recovered the international traffic from before the coronavirus pandemic; it has surpassed it. In April, the first month with some tourist activity, the es Codolar terminal recorded a total of 280,081 international travelers. This figure was 260,063 in 2019 which was the last year without the transport restrictions implemented in an attempt to contain the spread of the virus, representing a growth this year of 7.7% and more than 20,000 travelers.
Last year, the fourth month of the year closed with 23.321 international travelers, but a year earlier, during the height of the health crisis and in full confinement, the figure was reduced to just 36 passengers.
It is the lowest figure in the history of air transport on the islands, and the corresponding percentage increase of foreign tourists this year compared to then is disproportionate: 777,902%.
As for domestic passenger traffic, similar behavior has been seen in April. Last month there were 255,953 Spanish travelers compared to 256,964 in the same month three years ago, when there was still no trace of the coronavirus. The difference is minimal, a drop of just 0.4%.
In the Balearic Islands as a whole, 1.13 million international travelers were received in April
In the 2021 financial year, when the recovery of normality was taking its first steps, 81 arrived or left Ibiza by plane.
Borders closed
A much higher total than in the case of international travelers because the national airspace was open for emergencies.
In the Balearic Islands as a whole, a total of 1.13 million international travelers were received in April, 16.4% of the total number of passengers arriving in Spain. Thus, the archipelago ranked as the third autonomous community that received the most international travelers that month.
