The National Statistics Institute (INE) confirmed yesterday that the annual variation rate of the consumer price index (CPI) in June stood at 10.2%, a point and a half above that recorded in May and the highest since April 1985. Fuels; foodstuffs such as fruit, vegetables, meat, bread, milk, cheese and eggs; electricity; and restaurant and accommodation services were the main contributors to the increase in the annual CPI rate. The underlying inflation rate, which does not take into account unprocessed food or energy products (the most volatile values) rose by six tenths of a percentage point to 5.5%, the highest rate since August 1993.
