Off-duty Ibiza Policía Nacional officer saves choking baby’s life

The off-duty Policía Nacional officer heard the mother's desperate cries, "He's choking!"

A two year old baby could have choked to death had it not been for the quick thinking of an officer from the Ibiza Policía Nacional on Ibiza, who saved his life.

The Balearic Islands Police Headquarters they report that the agent was off duty when the events occurred. The man was walking his dog last Wednesday night, around 9pm, when he heard the screams of a woman: “He’s choking!”. The officer turned around and saw a woman, “who was very flustered”, screaming and with her child in her arms.

Quick thinking from Policía Nacional officer

The baby was unresponsive. He was unconscious and his face and lips were purple. The officer quickly released his dog to pick up the baby and place him face down on his forearm. He then began, as detailed in the statement, to give him dry blows on his back, between the shoulder blades.

The Policía Nacional officer was about to perform the ‘Heimlich’ maneuver when the child expelled through his mouth the remains of food that had caused him to choke. The baby burst into tears and began breathing again and the colour returned to his face.

The officer remained with the mother and child until he verified that the child was in good condition and was breathing normally.
