Ibiza and Formentera say goodbye to masks with one of the lowest incidences in the last 5 months

The Pitiuses remain the least affected by the virus in the Balearic Islands and will say farewell to the masks today

Ibiza and Formentera say goodbye today to the mandatory use of masks indoors (with exceptions) with one of the lowest incidences of coronavirus recorded in the Pitiusas in the last five months. This is revealed by the data of the covid viewer of the Balearic Ministry of Health, updated yesterday at noon. The Conselleria yesterday did not provide the number of patients currently hospitalized for covid in the Pitiusas, a figure which is reported once a week, on Thursdays.

At the moment, Ibiza registers 168.8 infections per hundred thousand inhabitants at two weeks. This is the lowest figure, except for the one registered ten days ago, recorded on the island since mid-November. A similar situation can be found on Formentera, where the incidence had not fallen below 35 since November 29th. In the case of Ibiza, the indicator at one week is 61 infections, well below half at two weeks, which suggests that, except in the case of an outbreak, covid infections will continue to decline. This is not the case on Formentera however, although it should be noted that, due to the small population, the greater or smaller level of contagions can greatly vary these indicators.

It should be noted, however, that at this time covid tests are only performed on vulnerable people, staff of health and social-health centers and those who have to be admitted to hospital. This change in strategy, made a few weeks ago, had already led to a reduction in the number of people affected by the virus. It should also be taken into account that the last five days have been holidays, so the number of coronavirus tests performed has been reduced and, consequently, the number of positives and the incidence.

By municipalities, only Sant Josep recorded its lowest indicator of the last five months on the day prior to the possibility of the removal of masks: 162.5 cases at fourteen days. The 197.5 infections in Vila are the second lowest figure after that recorded twelve days ago: 187.5. This is precisely the incidence recorded at the moment in Sant Antoni, 66 more than that recorded just two weeks ago, when it had only 121. It is, in fact, the period in the Pitiusas where the increase of covid recorded in recent weeks has been the most pronounced. Sant Joan and Santa Eulària have also experienced a small upturn in recent days, although milder. In all municipalities, however, the one-week indicator is well below half of the two-week infections, indicating that the incidence will continue to decline.

Where should masks continue to be worn indoors?

The Balearic Government reiterated yesterday at noon that masks will continue to be mandatory in pharmacies, public transport and health and social health centers. In addition, it recommended to keep masks on in public centers “when it is not possible to maintain the distance of one and a half meters in common spaces” or when there are no safety screens.
