More than 4,200 people have already signed the Pitiusa Association of Aid to Affected by Cancer (Apaac) petition for patients of the Pitiusas to receive “dignified care”. The letter, which the organization posted on the platform change.org three weeks ago, is addressed to the Balearic Govern and yesterday afternoon had already gathered more than 4,200 supporters, as can be seen on the portal itself.
Apaac decided to launch this initiative in one of the most critical moments of recent months, when the Can Misses Hospital was left with only one full-time oncologist on staff and another with a reduction of 25%. “We ask the Balearic Govern to guarantee quality care for people affected by cancer,” says the association in the presentation of its petition, which continues: “On Ibiza and Formentera, patients not only have to cope with their illness but also suffer the change of oncologist regularly. We want the professionals of the Oncology service of the Health Area of the Pitiusas to be loyal to the patients in order to put an end to these rotations”. The association recognizes that to mitigate the lack of doctors in the Oncology service of the Can Misses Hospital, specialists are moving from Mallorca every day; however, from the first moment all the Pitiusas associations of cancer patients have stressed the need for stable staff so that the doctor who attends a patient is always the same.
Apaac demands same care for cancer patients as on Menorca and Mallorca
“In recent weeks two specialists have left their jobs, leaving a staff of 1.75 oncologists instead of the necessary five, which will cause delays in appointments and directly affect the emotional state of patients. They need stability!”, they explain in the presentation of their petition, in which they claim that the Govern must guarantee that the patients of the Pitiusas have “the same” health care as those on Mallorca and Menorca.
