The definitive take-off of the tourism industry has allowed Ibiza airport to equal for the second consecutive month the activity figures of before the covid health crisis, which forced the confinement of the population for three months from mid-March 2020.
April exceeded the number of passengers of the same month of 2019, while May was just 3.5% below and last month was only 2.3% below June three years ago.
According to AENA, last month closed with 1.152.734 passengers on Ibiza (always counting incoming and outgoing passengers), compared to 1,179,537 in the sixth month of three years ago.
The difference is even greater if we compare the accumulated traffic of the last two years. In this first half of the year, 3,093,216 passengers have been recorded, compared to 1,035,668 from January to June 2021. This is a growth of 198.7%, or in other words, two million more users in just six months, or three times more.
Compared to 2019, the first six months of this year have resulted in a slight decrease in airport activity: 2.6%.
Three years ago, a total of 3,177 passengers passed through the es Codolar airport terminal from January to June, just 84,070 passengers, a mere 84,070 passengers.
The increase in the number of air transport users is directly related to the recovery of tourism, the islands’ main industry.
Change in national and internation airport traffic
This can be seen in the difference in the evolution of national and international traffic. The latter is growing more because some of the main issuing markets of tourists to Ibiza still applied some kind of restriction last year to their nationals when flying to other countries.
Thus, in June last year there were 248,446 passengers with international origin or destination, compared to 766,829 last month. This is an increase of 208.7%. Meanwhile, the number of domestic travelers this year stood at 382,544, compared to 267,448 in the same month last year (a 43% increase).
