That this year’s tourist season could be a record, if the Russian invasion of Ukraine and covid allow it, is warmly welcomed by all the Pitiusas social and economic agents. And confirming it are the cold hard facts, of the summary of the reservations that airlines that will be coming through Ibiza airport this summer: 54,800 transactions from the end of March until the last weekend of October (what is considered summer season for air transport), which represents an increase of 8% compared to the total activity of the same period of 2019, before coronavirus upended everything.
Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (AENA) already has the latest data on slot reservations (places for aircraft landing and take-off) booked by the different companies planning to operate at Ibiza airport this summer. And they do not differ too much from the previous ones offered in the middle of last February, when 9.2 million seats were announced, 12% more than in the summer of three years ago.
The terminal will manage an average of 252 flights every day this summer
Now, with the data at the end of March (they can change and in fact they do so continuously, according to the interests of the companies), the Ibizan terminal has to prepare to manage 21,318 flights coming from or going to national airports and another 33,482 to international airports. In those seven months of high season for air traffic, which represents a daily average of 252 flights.
The volume of domestic operations (including landings and takeoffs) represents 38.9% of the total, while flights to destinations outside the country accounts for the remaining 61.1%.
AENA points out that it is more than likely that this growth will not be so large at the end of the season. They certainly do not expect such pronounced growth every month. These data are subject to change by the airlines, which in addition to renouncing previously requested routes may reduce the frequencies planned on these routes, as has occurred in other years.
The same applies to the seats that airlines offer with their bookings. The total capacity of each aircraft is taken into account when calculating the number of seats. But the final traffic result will depend on the actual occupancy of each aircraft.
