Storm leaves Formentera’s stores without fresh produce for 3 days

The 'Nixe' and the 'Posidonia' make midday cargo runs to stock empty supermarket shelves after storm creates delays

Food stores on Formentera have not received fresh produce such as fruits, vegetables, dairy, eggs, sausages and meat for the last three days. As a result, the shelves of supermarkets that are open at this time are bare.

The reason is the wind storm from the northwest that has battered the Pitiusas for the last few days and has prevented the mixed cargo and passenger vessels, which operate at this time of the year on the line between the Pitiusas, from covering the scheduled connections.

Yesterday morning, the residents of Formentera who were looking for these products in their usual establishment had a hard time. In some sections, the shelves were empty and in the case of the Eroski supermarket in Sant Francesc, there was a sign on the shelves that read: ‘Due to the storm, we will not receive goods today. Sorry for the inconvenience’.

The arrival of goods through the storm

The hope was that the ferries ‘Posidonia’ and ‘Nixe’ both from the company Baleària, set sail at some point during the day. Finally, the ‘Nixe’ did so from Ibiza at 3pm returning an hour later from La Savina. Meanwhile, the ‘Posidonia’, which has more capacity, departed at 3:15pm to arrive at Formentera an hour and a quarter later and quickly unload the trucks of goods to return to Ibiza at 6:30pm.

These journeys were essential to refill the empty shelves of most of the island’s food stores, which had not been stocked since midday Monday.

One of the business owners in the sector, Joan Mayans, a member of the local Pime, lamented the lack of products that customers have been suffering for three days: “We have had shortages in fresh products and first thing this morning [yesterday], I thought the boat was going to leave. But no, they delayed it.”
