Teresa Lozano and Zua Mรฉndez are two friends and actresses who four years ago created Towanda Rebels, a feminist communication channel. If there is one thing that distinguishes them, it is the clear and direct language they use to defend human rights, especially those of the most vulnerable sectors of society and against gender-based violence.
One is a journalist and the other has a degree in Humanities and together they are committed to raising awareness and playing an active part in the social and cultural revolution that places women in the same position, in all senses of the word, as men in our society.
It all started when they decided to upload videos on feminism. One of them was about the 2016 Sanfermines gang rape, ‘Yo sรญ te creo’ (‘I do believe you’), and it had a huge impact. Soon after, the anti-prostitution video ‘#HolaPutero’ went viral. In addition, there was the publication of the book ‘#HolaGuerrera’ (Editorial Aguilar) and another in February this year, which includes various collaborations and is entitled ‘No somos princesas, somos guerreras’ (‘We are not princesses, we are warriors’).
Through their social networks, books, videos and plays, their commitment makes it clear that they are part of a generation ready to break the mould in the fight for women’s equality. For the last three years they have been travelling, giving conferences and keeping in touch, especially with young people and feminist groups. They themselves are surprised, although they admit that they are especially in demand when 25N or 8M (International Women’s Day) comes around.
Last night they delivered a lecture in Formentera, in the classroom of the Club de Deportes Nรกuticos, in La Savina, with the title: ‘Sexual violence and pornography’. This talk was organised by Espai Dones and the island’s Department of Equality as part of the events for the 25th of November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
“Prostitution and pornography are forms of gender-based violence against women and there is a direct link between the ‘pornification’ of culture with pornography reaching our young people and children at increasingly younger ages”. During their presentation they pointed out that “there is a direct link between the consumption of pornography and the rise of violence against women”.
